The future at sea is…electric

Not many years ago, the future of the maritime sector were gas-powered ships. Now, this has changed dramatically, and it appears that batteries are the future. No new ferry-tenders for the coast of Norway are requiring gas powered ships any longer, batteries is the now the new thing.

NCE Maritime Cleantech has now been granted 20 million NOK by the Norwegian government to support the building of the world’s first batteri-powered high speed craft (only batteries, with no diesel- or carbon engine back-up): a so-called “sea-tram” for the fjords and coastal cities of Norway. They call the project Urban Water Shuttle (UWS).

My first opinion seeing this is that these would be a really cool vessel for a more environmentally friendly transportation alternative on the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. I can see it happening!
