My Pride, My Thai part 25: Prachuap Khiri Khan - Hua Hin

The freedom of having a car, and being able to travel around Thailand as you please whenever and wherever you want, is perhaps one of the absolutely greatest things in life I think. At least in my life. This is undoubtedly one of the best ways to experience the entire country, and to meet the most fantastic people around. You are your own master behind the wheel, and no driver, route, or taxi will ever influence any of your decisions. I’m so extremely happy, and I feel so honored to say that I have had the fantastic privilege to drive in all of Thailand’s provinces and major towns: including an extensive tour visiting the towns and rural areas of "deep south” all the way back in 1999.

Naturally, driving in Thailand is indeed one frightening scenario. It is after all one of the most dangerous countries in the world to drive, but with the exception of a couple minor incidents, I have been extremely fortunate. Knock on wood! Yes, I have had my fair share of fines from the police up through the years, but I think that is quite normal for every foreign driver in Thailand. Thankfully, this practice is now more rare than what it used to be. At least when driving around the country side provinces.

When it comes to Bangkok, I could with the hand on my heart say that I used to know most places, streets, and side streets (soi’s) like the contents of my pockets, but after some years away, I clearly didn’t remember what I had in my pockets at arrival. A couple of days later, with some adjustments and checking of the contents of my pockets, Bangkok was back up and running again in my privately calibrated navigation system.

After having been living back in Norway for quite some years already, I continously find myself returning to, and checking out places that I visited in the past. Perhaps because these places where some kind of known territory”, or perhaps I was just being curious as to what had actually changed since my last visit. The best experiences are when you come across places where you meet people you still remember, and that occationally still remembers me back  I find those encounters pretty amazing and humbling.

The below images are sample images from a trip between Prachuap Khiri Khan and Hua Hin. Prachuap Khiri Khan is situated a really long one hour drive south of Hua Hin and not yet overdeveloped as a tourist destination, though, this place has for the past two decades been an absolutely favourite destination of mine. I love returning here each and every time.

Naturally, if you anyone ever need a private driver and a special Captains tour of Thailand, I pretty sure that I can be available for hire in a joint cooperation with local Thai guides.
